ARCOmadrid, the International Contemporary Art Fair
HONORABLE MENTION

- October 6, 2023
In 2022, Escobar participated in ARCOmadrid, the International Contemporary Art Fair in Spain. In addition to being the door to exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it was the key for the curatorial committee of Imaginarte Art Gallery, in Barcelona, and those who are the organizers of the Torres García Arts Award, to get to know his work.
The award ceremony was held on Friday, October 6, and although he did not win the award, he received an honorable mention, which resulted in publications in Spanish media.
The annual Torres García Award is a recognition of those individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional commitment and professionalism in their daily work. Samuel Escobar was the first Guatemalan to be nominated in the painting category.
“The curatorial committee wrote to me and told me that since that exhibition at ARCOmadrid they have followed the steps of my work. They saw the evolution and speed of how I have developed my art on the international scene. So, they thought I was an ideal candidate to be nominated for the award for the arts. That is what Victoria de la Serna, founder and director of the gallery, told me,” Escobar says.
“Therefore, the concept of hyperrealism is transformed, since it only serves me on a philosophical level where I go beyond reality and compose from what my mind can propose as a rebound of the persistence of reason over poetry,” he adds.
The award represents the “Universal Human” present in much of his work. It is named after the painter Joaquín Torres García, who was the creator of constructive universalism in the 1930s, which aims to achieve a universal language to express the cosmic order in which man is integrated.
Starting from very simple signs, and making it understandable for everyone. To do this, he develops a universal, geometric, and abstract language.
